There are a lot of shady reasons to use a proxy to be anonymous on the internet, and that's not what this article is about. There are a few reasons, besides simply avoiding the tracking of internet companies, to maintain anonymity for the sake of good on the internet. It's for these activities, that a proxy can give you a secret identity as you fight against evil in your own geeky way.
Get Involved in Internet Protests
Participating in a protest can be a great way to make a difference in your country, but if your'e like most geeks, getting out in a crowd of people is not exactly where you shine. These days though, there are protests you can participate in from your computer. You can sign petitions, create social network pages for a cause, and even send mass emails protesting a particularly evil organization or government official. Unfortunately, those on the other side have a lot of money and resources to devote to tracking you down, and when this happens, they can wage their own war. In order to prevent them from tracing those emails and cause pages back to you, you can use a private proxy to create, publish, and send them. For the most part, this will stop their search once it reaches your proxy server, which could tell them you are Heinz from Berlin instead of the geek across the street. The now infamous group Anonymous uses this, as well as many other sophisticated techniques, to gain a voice in political protests.
Win the Flagging War
If you've spent much time at all on the internet, you know it's not all appropriate for everyone. In fact, even as an adult you've probably come across some content that offends you. Many companies now offer the option to flag content. This allows you to put offensive content on their list of sites to check and hopefully, to block. Unfortunately, if the site you're using, such as Craigslist or YouTube, finds your ethics to be a little stricter than need be, they can ban you from their site for excessive flagging. You can avoid this by using a proxy when carrying out your internet cleansing activities.
Tip Off the Authorities
If you want to make a bigger difference right in your own neighborhood, you might want to tell the authorities some sensitive information that you have access to. The problem is you don't want them asking a bunch of follow-up questions as to how you came about this information. Maybe any attention you receive from the police would be obvious to the people you implicated and you would eventually have to face their wrath. For these situations, don't just let the crimes continue. Instead, create an anonymous email address while connected to your proxy server and send them as much detailed information as you can. They can still contact you with follow-up questions if they need to, but you'll be able to decide whether or not to continue your communication on your own terms.
There are many reasons to maintain your anonymity on the web, and by using a proxy server you can do just that. All we ask is that you use the powers of your proxy for good!
